The work is entitled Indeed, the Only Way, signifying consideration
of the historical process, social evolution, concepts of time and
space, and personal life. The “stage” scene composed of red carpet, mirror surfaces and silver wallpaper, the collective performance and the personal intervention (in the form of the audience), and the rules of order
for passage through the space all indicate the emanation of certain power relations and the social landscape and cultural inertia which they bring. Yang Fudong’s filming of the performance and the subsequent video, in turn, strips and reshapes all of the show from time and space into a suspended image, psychologically confronting the visitors experiencing the open space. As time passes and the experiences and interpretations of different individuals in the space grow, more complex contexts and threads are formed and dispersed. (Text courtesy of PSA)
