Beyond Good and Evil – Enemies of Truth combines two highly oppositional and dialectical statements drawn from the classic aphorisms of the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Yang Fudong merges them into the title of his latest series. Selected quotations are juxtaposed in sequence with newly created photographs concealed beneath black glass, producing a visual experience that oscillates between obscurity and clarity.
The photographs themselves, inherently sharp in detail, become faintly visible beneath the darkened glass, while the viewer’s own reflection emerges as the most important narrator within the work. Each disrupted image intertwines an ancient setting with a contemporary temporality. In parallel, Nietzsche’s quotations reflect upon themes such as human nature, desire, and society from multiple perspectives.
As part of the Beyond Good and Evil series, Beyond Good and Evil – Enemies of Truth selects images from The Morning After: New Museum Film Project and further deepens the contemporary relevance of the sole script used during filming — quotations from Nietzsche.
