Happiness refers to a series of joyful and pleasant emotions that humans subjectively experience, stemming from their sense of satisfaction and security. This series employs the heavy and dense deep-sea mollusk shell, "Hyotissa hyotis", as its central material. The shell, serving as the protective armor for mollusks, transcends their biological lifespan, enduring for tens of thousands of years. Its thick and tightly sealed structure may have once provided an abundant sense of security to the mollusk.
In this work, Polaroid photographs of human portraits are developed and adhered to the inner surface of the shell, symbolizing a representation of the present. Within this context, the series explores the coexistence of seemingly opposing concepts: permanence and transience, lightness and weight, hardness and softness, destruction and protection, and a sense of fulfillment versus crisis. By using the shell as a universal metaphor, the work seeks to reflect on society and contemporary experiences of happiness.
