Many of Li Shan's recent creations have mainly focused on themes like aberrance, genetic recombination and species inter-combination. So it is of little surprise that in his recent installation entitled Donkey, Shan presents the viewer with the outrageous image of a donkey covered with glued on butterflies and dressed up in the manner of an office lady, wearing red high-heels and its think lips painted red. Furthermore, the best's penis is strikingly displayed, deifying more conventional stereotypes of the animal. Through breaking conventions and altering nature, this installation achieves a giant impact in terms of visual language. As most of us know from experience, the more unusual a display the easier it is to attract viewers. Thus works such as Donkey compel us to observe not only animal life but also nature from a fresh angle, gradually impelling us to adopt another way of thinking that will push us further towards the core of this artistic idea.
