In the process of reading, skipping words, misreading, or mispronunciation are inevitable. For Li Shan, these are indeed the most charming and meaningful incidents. If they are connected to a behavior of reading, a new definition of life and creation of alternative art can be spawned. The huge painting exhibited in R108 seems to be a conceptual sketch of a biologist before he carries out an experiment. An unfinished work of art, it records the traces of the artist’s thinking and is garnished with conflicting elements and contradicting vocabulary. In fact, it can be regarded as an embodiment of Li Shan’s bio-art concept, “All life is equal and the same” in a panel painting. The painting juxtaposes tiger, human, dragonfly, sperm, and other symbols of life, presenting a progressive state of information exchange in genetics with a purpose that Li Shan has uttered, “I provide the symbols and present them to you. I have reached this goal!”
